With modern technology allowing us to connect in ways we never thought possible, tracking our fitness goals and finding creative ways to stay active has become easier than ever. Personal trainer and cover model Lonan O’Herlihy, aka The Posh PT, has taken this to a whole other level, and found a unique way to run his fitness business while traveling the world. Between time constraints and wanderlust, Lonan found it difficult to commit enough time to a gym and his clients face-to-face. But this is when Skype comes in.

Skype has allowed Lonan to bring customized workout routines directly into his clients’ homes…from anywhere in the world. Even with a packed travel schedule, Lonan never loses out on business and his clients never lose their trainer. As long as there’s signal, the training session can go on. The benefits of being able to communicate with his clients via Skype has eliminated gym rent fees, the need to be in overcrowded spaces, the excuse for being late due to traffic, and given him the flexibility to travel and lead the life he wants to live.

How did you get into fitness? (你是怎样开始健身的?)


Plenty of injuries from sports when I was younger forced me into injury rehab. At a young age, I saw what I could do with my body and how it was changing, and I loved it. If I could help others improve physical ability and image (if that’s their goal) or just to improve health, then it was always going to be a big plus.

Helping others and growing the industry I’m in. I am already seen as one of the major global contributors to the online fitness industry, so I must set a good example and try to keep the industry growing in the right direction, through health and knowledge. Most of my clients—the ones who have been with me for a while now anyway—have seen great results, not only by looking and feeling better, but through strengthening weaknesses for long-term improvements in the body.

Yes! I offered the service as a trial for free to my first two clients. I thought it could work and we all soon realized how beneficial it was. I have now been training both of them for two years and, between us, we have trained in over 20 countries during that time.

I am now a mobile business, entirely online, and not held back by work or rent fees, which can be a problem for many people in my industry. I also don’t have the added pressure of losing a client to holiday, overseas work, cancelations, time constraints, or the dreaded Christmas break, which we all know can be very hard to stay focused and healthy on.

What does a typical Skype session look like?(典型的Skype会话是什么样子的?)


Whether it’s in your living room, home gym, public gym, or hotel, the session will mostly consist of bodyweight exercises and High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts. If weights need to be introduced. it is never a problem. However, with bodyweight and the ability to train someone without weights, you not only help the clients learn more about what they can do with their own body, but reduce risk of injury and need very little space to have a great workout.

As I mentioned, I do train everywhere. This year, I recently had a client call whilst I was in a taxi coming back from a meeting in Shoreditch to my home in Chelsea, London, UK. This was a client from the US who had a business conference in Zurich, Switzerland. When he arrived at his hotel his meeting was delayed so he gave me a call to see if we could work out, and we did. I’m sure my taxi driver thought the whole thing was a bit strange!

Also, on Boxing Day (Dec. 26), I led a boot camp in Aspen, Colorado for six people whilst I was in Barbados! That was quite a fun experience.

Could you take us through a typical day in your life? (你能带我们度过你生命中的一个典型的日子吗?)


I’m a morning person, so I like to be up at 6am to finish any admin work I may have outstanding before I train. Then, around 7:30 I like to train (luckily the gym I go to is a 50-meter walk away). After this, I pick up my food for the day, then I will normally have clients from around 11am – 2pm and maybe 5pm – 7pm depending on the time difference. I try to limit to a maximum of 3-4 clients a day. Between them, I train and work on content for my social channels, which luckily is not too stressful. I like working this way to ensure I stay on top of everything and enjoy what I do.

What are your five top tips to stay in shape? (你保持身材的五大秘诀是什么?)


1、Diet. This for me is the most vital by far, yet everyone is unique, but I was unaware of this importance until my knowledge improved, then I saw the real difference in my body.

2、Regular exercise. I try to train five times a week at least!

3、Lots of water. Three liters a day for me.

4、Enough sleep. 7 hours or more.

5、Occasional treatment. Luckily my girlfriend @thephitphysio helps me recover and if anything is injured or not feeling great, she helps out through deep tissue massage most of the time. I always recommend looking after your body as a lot of training can really take a toll on your well-being if you’re not looking after your joints and tight muscles!
